A Trip Battle Abbey
The building of the Benedictine Abbey at Battle began in 1071 and was built at the request of William the Conqueror to atone for the bloodshed that ensued on that infamous day in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings. The high altar was situated to mark the spot where Harold Godwinson was supposedly killed, although the legend of him receiving an arrow to the eye is a fiction and it was far more likely that he was hacked down by a medieval ‘Death Squad’. Thankfully today you can walk the grounds of Battle Abbey looking at the Abbey ruins, the beautiful gatehouse and visit the battleground all without fear of taking an arrow to any part of your body.
